Our friends and family live in fear of us when we become hangry (hungry + angry). To prevent this petrifying monster from presenting itself, we at Essence are firm believers in the power of snacks. Eating between meals allows you to fuel your body and prevent blood sugar drops: which can lead you to over-eating at the next meal. Snacks are also a delightful vehicle to get your allotted fruits/vegetable requirements in during the day.

The ideal snack is composed of some protein, some complex carbohydrate, and a bit of healthy (unsaturated) fat. Fiber is always a bonus as well. You should be eating a meal or snack every 3 hours, so for most people, two snacks per day is sufficient. Planning snacks is important to your snacking success; you never want to find yourself without one. If you know that your snack is only going to be out of the refrigerator for a couple of hours, you have more flexibility when it comes to choosing snacks that won’t spoil.

It’s a good idea to switch up your snacks daily so you access a wider variety of nutrients and avoid getting bored. Don’t forget to pre-package your snack in the recommended Essence portion so you don’t overeat or mindlessly eat out of a container.
