Doggie-Friendly Dining

D

Only a villain could resist that puppy dog stare from under the table – that beseeching look for just o n e bite.

We don’t recommend indiscriminate table food for pets — there are definitely foods toxic to pups (to name a few – grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, chocolate, macadamia nuts…) But you can (probably) safely feed your dogs some treats that you also could consider for your own health.

Check with your vet first, and then chow down on some puppy friendly-chow like:

  • Canned pumpkin
  • Parsley
  • Carrots
  • Plain grilled chicken without spices
  • Blueberries
  • Cheerios
  • Apples
  • Zucchini
  • Natural peanut butter
  • Eggs
  • Plain yogurt
  • Popcorn

Portions matter — a little goes a long way for dogs. They’re smaller than us! (For the most part.) you can use this list creatively — think pumpkin yogurt muffins with carrot and zucchini. Apples with peanut butter.  Popcorn and cheerio “trail mix.” And don’t let them wolf (dog) it down. Dogs can’t practice mindful eating, but we can pace them.

“Sharing is caring,” says one of our practice dietitian’s four-year olds. So enjoy a mindful nourishing moment with your cutie canine.
